Alaro canvasses “balanced education” for proper development

A former Head of the Department of Islamic Law, University of Ilorin, Prof. AbdulRazzaq AbdulMajeed Alaro, mni, has urged parents and guardians to prioritise the spiritual well-being of their children and wards as the younger ones are stimulated towards the pursuit of preferred professional training.

Prof. Alaro gave this advice penultimate Sunday (March 3, 2024) while speaking at the graduation ceremony of Al-Hudah Islamiyyah School, Ilorin. The school is owned by a distinguished educationist and former Deputy Vice Chancellor (Management Services), University of Ilorin, Prof. Adedayo Yusuf Abdulkareem

The renowned specialist in Islamic financial services explained that unveiling  situations across the world have shown that members of the younger generations needed to be exposed to what he called “balanced education” for them to live a very useful life and contribute meaningfully to human development.

Prof. Alaro, who is a member of the Central Bank of Nigeria’s Financial Regulation Advisory Council of Experts, opined that for proper growth and development every human being needed to nurture his body and soul. He explained that while professional training would provide food for the body, the diet needed by the soul is solely obtainable from religious and moral teachings.

He added that the absence of either of the two may not only retard the desired development but may also lead to outright destruction of both the body and the soul.

While he explained that it is good for parents to devote substantial resources and efforts towards their children becoming great in life through Western formal education, he added that such training must be mingled with the inculcation of the right values, which religious education has in abundance, for such individuals to become useful to themselves and the society at large.

The renowned cleric-don warned that any form of education that is devoid of religious education would only lead to perversion.

Prof. Alaro, who is also a member of the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria-based National Fatwa Committee, said that when young children are exposed to religious and moral teachings right from infancy they would grow to become responsible citizens.

To buttress his position, Prof. Alaro recalled the case of a French-born Professor of Economics and ex-President of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Dominique Strauss-Kahn, who did not only lose his highly-coveted position ignobly but also consequently failed in his bid to become the President of his country simply because he couldn’t act rightly with a member of the opposite sex.

The award-winning legal luminary explained that if the ex-IMF Chief had gone through proper religious and moral instructions while growing up he would not have experienced what he went through as a result of his attempt to have forceful carnal knowledge of an innocent woman.

Prof. Alaro commended the former Deputy Vice Chancellor for establishing and nurturing the school, which he said would continue to produce remarkable future gentlemen and ladies like its proprietor.

He urged other serving and retired academics and public officers as well as privileged individuals to find a way of giving back to the society as exemplified in the establishment of the School by Prof. Abdulkareem, who is also a former Provost, Kwara State College of Education, Ilorin.

The event attracted dignitaries from far and near including the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Management Services), University of Ilorin, Prof. Suleiman Funsho Ambali; the Director, Centre for Peace and Strategic Studies, University of Ilorin, Prof. Abdilganiyu Ibrahiim Jawondo; a former Dean of the Faculty of Law, University of Ilorin, Prof. Abdulqadir Ibrahiim Abikan; the Director, Central Research Laboratories and Chief Imam, University of Ilorin Central Mosque, Prof. Nasir Abdussalaam and the Chairman, Education Committee, Ilorin Emirate Descendants Progressive Union, Mallam Shehu Ahmad Aliyu, who represented the Union’s National President, Alhaji Abdulmumini Ayo Abdulmalik, among several others.

UNILORIN, Lancaster varsity to train 680 STEM staff, students for ASPP

The University of Ilorin, in collaboration with Lancaster University, United Kingdom, will be training 80 staff members and 600 STEM-based students as part of the African Strategic Partnership programme(ASPP).

Speaking with UNILORIN BULLETIN last Tuesday (March 12, 2024), the Director of the African Strategic Partnership, Lancaster University, Dr Akanimo Odon, who disclosed that the programme is fixed for April 1, 2024, explained that the project is a specific briefing for staff and students of the University on back up of sustainable career and entrepreneurship for Nigerian universit

Dr Odom explained that both programmes are for STEM-based staff and students with a small gap for Non-STEM participants who proved worthy of the programme. He said that the project is funded by the Foreign Common Wealth Development in the United Kingdom through rolling out a pilot across Nigerian universities where staff and students are nominated and appointed within two months and exposed to the fundamental principles of practical preparation.

Dr Odom, who was in the University to perfect the arrangement, noted that the programme is not entrepreneurship on the students’ portfolio but helping them develop an entrepreneurship mindset.

He maintained that because the programme is a pilot one, the impact is determined through the use of parameters thereby running concurrently with the theme for staff as “Stimulating Sustainable Entrepreneurial Thinking in Scientific Sets”, at the same time, that of the students is “International Career Coaching Program (ICCP)”.

Speaking on the figures to be onboarded for the programme, Dr Odon noted that the onboarding phase has started in the last two months on different platforms through briefing, engaging and interacting with participants about the programme.

On the gains, he noted that there is a massive gap between academia, research and industry and this cuts across all universities either federal, state or privately owned.

Dr Odom disclosed that one of the benefits of the programme is to practicalise the sizes and learning based on a robust framework, thereby impacting staff on capacity for them to be entrepreneural in their mindset, allowing them to communicate beyond their research papers to industries, among others.

He said that the students will expose the beneficiaries to career dimensions and routes, understanding their strengths and weaknesses and how they can improve on their mindsets thereby aligning their knowledge to market demands and how to solve problems in their immediate environment.

He noted that the programme is designed to be learning by doing things and at the end of the two months, participants will be amazed at their growth and achievements.

Speaking on the programme, the Director of the Technical and Entrepreneurship Centre (TEC), Prof. Raheem Adebimpe Usman, applauded the initiative and commended the rare opportunity given to the University as representative of the North Central zone for the programme.

Prof. Usman noted that a critical gap exists between academia and social marketing, stating that letting people know what you are doing is the beginning of success.

“The programme will let people know what we do in the University, which will also increase the income generated by the University”, he said.

He noted that the programme will also allow the University to leverage the student population including the undergraduates and postgraduates on how they can learn not only research but how to market themselves.

The Director, however, appreciated the University management for accepting the invitation to be a part of the programme and pleaded for continued support to make the programme a successful one.

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, has urged the Federal Government and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to provide grants instead of loans to the nation’s universities to enhance the Tertiary Institutions Poultry Revival Scheme (TIPRES).

Prof. Egbewole made this appeal last Tuesday (March 12, 2024) in his office while fielding questions from newsmen.

The Vice Chancellor highlighted the University’s proactive approach towards the growth and development of the poultry industry in Nigeria’s tertiary education system through its Ggmax Poultry Farm initiative.

Prof. Egbewole explained that the grants will better equip the University in providing comprehensive training to staff members and practical experience to the students and ultimately contribute to the overall revival of poultry farming in the country.

The Vice Chancellor assured the government that the University would continue to uphold its culture of responsibility and non-abandonment of projects.

Speaking further on the University’s poultry project, Prof. Egbewole expressed the University’s determination to ensure the success of the TIPRES scheme.

He explained that the University is the only institution of higher learning that accessed a N600,000,000 loan repayable over a period of five years.

He added that the University has been religiously observing the quarterly payments of between N37,000,000 and N40,000,000, which is usually deducted directly from the source.

Prof. Egbewole pointed out that the cumulative interest and capital will be totalling over a billion  Naira at the end of the loan period.

The renowned Senior Advocate of Nigeria said that the University of Ilorin is like a Guinea pig to the scheme and the poultry, saying that poultry business is facing the challenges of  the rising price of poultry feeds, which has eroded a lot of the capital.

On his part,  the Chief Operating Officer of UNILORIN Ggmax Poultry Farm, Mr Gawati Adedayo, recalled that the farm was established in 2022 with 15,000 layer birds and 30,000 broiler with the vision to sell six tonnes every week of broiler meat and at present the layer pen has about 30,000 birds producing between 800 and 850 crates of eggs per day with each pen accommodating 5,000 birds.

Mr Gawati added that the challenges faced in the past five months have led to the folding up of about 50% of poultry farms in the country.

He, however, assured that the Ggmax is working towards ensuring the success of the project as he assured that the farm would soon  start earning the University revenue

Commenting on the significance of the farm project, Mr Gawati explained that the farm has been generating employment , particularly for the people of the host  community, saying no fewer than 100 individuals are engaged in various activities in the farm since its establishment.

He added that the positive economic impacts of the farm are also being felt by more than 5000 other individuals.

Mr Gawati said that Ggmax is profit driven and presently worth over a billion naira, adding that the products are sold across the country due to the quality and neatness of the birds.

He applauded the University management for having the courage to embark on the project and  making a success  of it.

He cited the cases of the Vice Chancellors of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Prof. Temidayo Oladiji; and the Fountain University, Osogbo, Prof. Ramota Olabisi Karim, who prior to their present positions were Deans of the Faculties of Life Sciences and Agriculture of the University of Ilorin, respectively. Abdulbaqi tasks journalists on aggressive reporting of climate change

An Associate Professor of Mass Communication at the University of Ilorin, Dr Saudat Abdulbaqi, has urged journalists to aggressively report climate change and climate actions to mitigate its effects on the people.

Dr Abdulbaqi, who gave the charge last Thursday (March 7. 2024) at a Climate Change Journalism Workshop in Ilorin, said journalists should drive the issue of climate change in their daily reporting from different beats.

The Workshop was organised by Brain Builders Youth Development Initiative in conjunction with the Sobi FM Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalist (NUJ).

Dr Abdulbaqi said journalists were the last hope of the common man regarding creating awareness on how human activities caused climate change, especially in rural areas where they had little or no knowledge about it.

The Communication scholar said, “Climate change is not new, but we are shying away from taking decisive steps to mitigate it.

Dr Abdulbaqi, who is a Council Member of the Nigeria Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), said it was high time journalists learnt more about climate change; conduct research for the purpose of replication and dig deeper to know if the consequences of climate change could be prevented.

She added that journalists should pay more attention to stories and reports about climate change as it affects our way of life and existence.

On his part, one of the organisers of the Worksop, Mr Dare Akogun, who spoke on “Fact Checking and Debunking Myths on Climate Change”, tasked the government on engaging experts while coming up with policies on climate change.

Mr Akogun, who is the News Editor, Sobi FM, Ilorin, said that journalists should be able to hold leaders and government accountable through their climate reports.

The expert on Climate Change reporting said journalists should, through their reports, open the eyes of the policy makers to what could be done to mitigate the effects of climate change in the society.

The well-attended Workshop drew participants from a cross section of journalists from print, electronics, and online media as well as government information outlets and non-goveenmental climate change activists.

Egbewole canvasses responsible unionism

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, has  reiterated the call for responsible unionism among staff members of the University, saying that there is no reason for the management and unions to see one another as rivals.

Prof. Egbewole stated this penultimate Friday (March 1, 2024) while receiving the institution’s branch of the newly established Nigerian Association of Medical and Dental Academics (NAMDA).

While acknowledging the historical roles played by the unions towards the stability, growth and development of the nation’s University system, particularly the University of Ilorin, the Senior Advocate of Nigeria said that his primary goal as Vice Chancellor is to maintain a seamless and stable academic calendar in the University.

The UNILORIN Chief Executive urged NAMDA to establish a constructive working relationship with other unions on campus, noting that there must be a shared objective of advancing the University.

Speaking on the importance of unity, the Vice Chancellor stated that collective efforts benefit the University and the unions as well as their respective  members.

Recognising the intrinsic nature of unionism as driven by individual interests, Prof. Egbewole expressed his support for NAMDA in advocating the rights and privileges of its members.

He, however, stressed the need for all the unions to prioritise the interests of their members while working together for the greater good of the University.

In view of  occasional divergence within the Joint Action Committee (JAC) on significant matters, Prof. Egbewole called for caution and a constant awareness of their responsibilities as members of the University of Ilorin community.

Expressing gratitude for the NAMDA’s alignment with his vision 1:10:500, which is aimed at positioning the University  as the best in Nigeria and among the first 10 in Africa and one of the  leading  500 universities at global level, the Vice Chancellor commended the union’s adaptability and responsibility in the dynamic educational landscape of the country.

He pointed out that working collectively toward this ambitious goal reflects the union’s commitment to the university’s success.

Speaking earlier, the Chairman of NAMDA, Prof. Muhammed Abdulkadir, said that the new Union, which was registered in January 2023, comprises qualified medical teachers in the universities, University Teaching Hospitals and various associated research centers.

Presenting a copy of the Union’s constitution to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Abdulkadir disclosed that NAMDA boasts 131 registered members from both the University of Ilorin and University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, adding that similar chapters of the Association have been established in several other universities and medical centers across the country.

Addressing the controversy surrounding NAMDA’s establishment during the last ASUU strike, Prof. Abdulkadir clarified that the Association’s inception process began in the 2018/19 academic session and the primary aim for initiating it was to recognise the unique needs and challenges faced by medical practitioners within the University, which were not adequately addressed by the existing unions.

He clarified that, “We did not see our registration as a means to divide ASUU but as a means of providing a voice to who we represent.”

The NAMDA Chairman reiterated the Association’s commitment to advancing ideas within the University and expressed full support for the administration’s visions.

He reassured that NAMDA is ready to collaborate in every possible way to contribute to the realisation of the University’s goals.

Other members of the delegation were the Ag. Provost College of Health Sciences, Prof. L. O. Abdur-Rahman; the MDCAN Chairman, Prof. O. O. Ibrahim; Prof. E. A. O. Afolayan, Prof. A. A. Akanbi II; and NAMDA Auditor, Prof. O. A. Afolabi, among others.

“I think it is time, not to leave the security, the monitoring of miscreants in the University to the management alone. I would have dared to challenge the government to establish a duty post for NDLEA in every institution so that they monitor and nip in the bud any suspected behaviour, which is likely to snowball into the kind of things we are hearing today”, Prof. AbdulRaheem insisted.

The renowned academic, who is also the Talba of Ilorin, added, “It is a bit saddening that our higher institutions have become, regrettably, dens of miscreants, drug addicts and  anti-social behaviour. It is not something that started yesterday, It’s been long coming, and I think the government must wake up to its responsibility”.

While expressing his dismay over the rate of drug abuse, among other social vices in  higher institutions of learning, Prof. AbdulRaheem urged the authorities of each of the institutions of higher learning to be “vigilant in selection of students, screening of students for admission, and monitoring that they live decent, disciplined and drug-free lives”.

He added that it was hightime that the entire nation rose to save the lives and future of the younger generation of its population. He added that the young people needed to be properly monitored and guided at this time, more than ever before as he said that the nation may be living on a keg of gunpowder if nothing is done.

Prof.AbdulRaheem, who also served as the pioneer Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the Kwara State University, Malete, however, noted that the problem transcends the tertiary institutions as it began right from lower level of education as well as from home.

“It looks like things have come to an extreme situation now, beyond what the university administrator, the Vice Chancellor or other people can control, because the character moulding process does not start in the university. There are things that are carried over from the lower rungs of education, the primary school, the secondary school, the home”, he said.

The elder statesman added that it is the duty of the parents and guardians to monitor their children and discourage them from engaging in anti-social activities like drug addiction and fraud as they are dangerous for their future progress.

Addressing the youth, Prof. AbdulRaheem explained that the perilous activities they engaged in always looked alluring to the ignorant young people but they never know that such tendencies are actually dangerous for their future progress.

The former Vice Chancellor also noted that law enforcement agencies should be allowed and empowered to perform their duties and justice should be allowed to take its course in order to prevent others from following the footsteps of the culprits.

Prof. AbdulRaheem said, “I think the law enforcement should be allowed to take its course. If the culprits are found culpable, they should be punished according to the law and be made examples to others who are likely to follow in their footsteps”.

The erudite scholar noted that the community leaders also have a role to play in monitoring the upbringing of the children in order to eradicate drug abuse as well as other social vices in the society.

He said, “There must be some community  efforts to monitor the growth and the direction of the lifestyle of young people. In the past, it used to be collective and communal that we train our children together, a neighbour can also monitor the child of a neighbour in order to prevent the child from becoming a menace.

Prof. AbdulRaheem noted further, “The community leaders should be concerned about the health of the community, mental, physical, and infrastructure health of the society. They must be attentive at all times to the nuances of life around them and around their environments. So, traditional rulers have a duty as family people to cater for the other family, as much as they would for themselves and their own families”.

Don’t leave Nigeria for politicians alone, UNILORIN VC tells professionals

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, has implored professionals not to leave Nigeria in the hands of politicians.

Prof. Egbewole gave this advice while delivering a lecture, titled “Town Planners, Sustainable Development and Nation Building”, at the 10th Waheed Kadiri Lecture Series held in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, penultimate Saturday (March 2, 2024).

The lecture was organised by the Ogun State Chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners (NITP) in honour of its former President, Mr Waheed Kadiri.

Delivering his lecture, Prof. Egbewole explained that professionals must always make themselves available for nation building and must not leave the task for politicians alone.

The Vice Chancellor stated that there is inherent danger in leaving politicians solely in charge of developing Nigeria, saying, “To a large extent, our decision-makers are planning illiterate”.

According to Prof. Egbewole, “It is now more imperative to allow professionals build our nation than succumb to the manipulations of the few and octopus called government.

The Vice Chancellor charged Town   Planners “to promote lively and self-sustaining communities, pointing out that “town planning propositions must be ingenious to foster mix of residential, commercial and recreational land uses and enforce zoning restrictions that allow for mixed-use projects, building a feeling of community and reducing commuting lengths, as much as practicable”.

Prof. Egbewole, who is also the Secretary-General of the Association of West African Universities (AWAU), said, “Every plan should be people-centered. As a process, planning must follow the dictates of Peoples Leading in Addressing their Needs (PLAN) that allows the targeted beneficiaries to take leading roles in conception and settings.

He added that “Town Planners must prioritise and plan for efficient and well-maintained infrastructures, including transportation, utilities, and public services that meet future requirements and provide fair access to essential services.”

Criminology Dept. records breakthrough in fingerprint identification
In a rare feat in forensic research, which stands the University of Ilorin at par with its peers across the world, the Department of Criminology and Security Studies has recorded a breakthrough in an experiment, which successfully uncovered fingerprints of robbers.
Following a burglary at the residence of a University staff member, a forensic investigation team from the Department of Criminology and Security Studies initiated an investigation, leading to the identification of the suspects’ fingerprints eight weeks after the crime was committed.
In a chat with UNILORIN BULLETIN in his office last Monday (February 26, 2024), the Head of the Department, Prof. Ali Arazim Abdullahi, said that the forensic investigation team, which comprised some staff and selected 300 Level students of the Department, carried out the investigation.
Abdullahi, a Professor of Sociology, revealed that despite the lack of necessary facilities to carry out the investigation, the forensic team devised a seamless and successful traditional method on account of its expertise.
The don, therefore, called for closer collaboration with the various security agencies, saying, “The breakthrough underscores the importance of town and gown collaboration, he said that the University of Ilorin needed to partner with the security agencies in the country.
He said, “I feel that we can learn one or two things from the security agencies, and they also need to learn a lot from us. We need to collaborate more on matters like this to ensure that our society is crime- free”.
The Head of Department encouraged members of staff who encounter similar situations to approach the Department for assistance, saying that the forensic team, which is led by Dr Adedeji Oyenuga, a sabbatical staff at the Department, is ever ready to swing into action.
Speaking on the value added to the Department by the forensic team lead, Prof. Abdullahi said, “Dr Oyenuga, being a sabbatical staff, has brought valuable contributions to our Department. In fact, his actions and contributions ever since he came have spoken volume of the significance of the sabbatical programme, because, he provided us with the opportunity to embark on innovative endeavours that wouldn’t have been possible without the sabbatical ”.
Also speaking with the UNILORIN BULLETIN, the leader of the forensic investigation team, Dr Oyenuga, posited that the next step in the investigation process is for the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) or the Police to provide us with the necessary support and approach the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to obtain information on the fingerprints extracted from the crime scene.
Dr Oyenuga said that despite the absence of devices like a fumed chamber and other advanced equipment typically found in developed countries, the team improvised with unconventional and artificial methods by utilizing local materials to achieve the seamless and convincing results from the crime scene exhibits.
The don said that the process is scientific and reliable because it can be repeated by anyone who is trained. He added that his team was very meticulous in managing the crime scene, and the laboratory environment.
He stressed the significance of wearing gloves to prevent exhibit tampering, noting that carrying out foresic investigation at a crime scene without gloves may raise suspicion.
Commenting on the involvement of his students, Dr Oyenuga, who is the Chief Executive Officer of Digout Consult, a registered private investigation firm, confirmed that the students played a pivotal role in the entire process, as they are expected to leverage their experience to replicate similar processes continously, from now on. He said that with improved resources at their disposal, they are ‘‘likely to excel even more than we did”.
Speaking on the development, a member of the team, Mr Obasanjo Balogun revealed that he had doubts initially before he took a keen interest in the exercise. According to him, “watching the fingerprints revealed in the laboratory was a wonderful experience”.
The lecturer, however, highlighted the need for a fume chamber and other equipment in the laboratory to work on certain evidences that currently cannot be utilised due to the lack of standard equipment in the laboratory.
Another lecturer at the Department, Mr Ibrahim Abdullahi Kayode, commended the leadership of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, for providing the Department with equipment during the last accreditation exercise, noting that the successful experiment justifies further investment in the Department of Criminology and Security Studies.
In his reaction, the victim, who sought anonymity, said ” the Department of Criminology, University of Ilorin, has emerged as a silver lining in a very dark cloud of the saga and a guide to the light at the end of the pitch-dark tunnel of helplessness that my family and I had been thrown into by the poor security architecture of Nigeria”.
He added that, the University of Ilorin, like any University worth its salt, has shown that it exists not to fulfill the proverbial academic exercise, but to solve the challenges faced by the individual human, and the problems facing humanity as a collective.
He therefore called on the University of Ilorin’s management to support the Department of Criminology, with a better equipped forensic laboratory, saying, this will further project the university as being envisioned by the administration of Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN.
On their part, the 300 level students who joined in the forensic analysis namely Miss Adedolapo Adewuyi, Mr Adeniyi Bodunrin and Mr Abdulhakeem Fagbemi ,shared their joy in a chat with the UNILORIN BULLETIN.
Miss Adewuyi said, “The experience created a magical feeling in me during the fingerprint extraction and being part of the team make me believe I have reached a new level of accomplishment.”
On his part, Mr Adeniyi said, “I found the experience both fantastic and surprising, I was intrigued by the confidence displayed by Dr Oyenuga.”
Mr Fagbemi said that “I considered the experience a miracle, akin to witnessing television scenes come to life. I felt like they were doing work of the Nigerian police.”
