The Faculty of Education

Faculty of EducationThe Faculty of Education, which is a pacesetter in terms of the quality of its academic staff, infrastructure, teacher education curriculum, and its disciplined students, was one of the three pioneer Faculties (Arts, Education, and Science) when the University was established in 1976.

The Faculty has grown by leaps and bounds from the initial two Departments (Teacher Education and Guidance and Management), to five (5) Departments today:  Arts and Social Sciences Education; Educational Management; Educational Guidance and Counselling; Physical and Health Education; and Science Education. The Faculty also has the Institute of Education and two other Units namely: Centre for Supportive Services for the Deaf, and the Educational Technology Centre. The Faculty has witnessed tremendous growth in terms of students’ enrolment, staff recruitment, programme diversification and general output. The Faculty has made tremendous impact in the areas of teaching, learning, research, and service to the community.

Historical Development

Vision and Objectives of the Faculty
The main objectives of the Faculty of Education are:

  1. To produce professionally well-qualified graduate teachers in the Humanities, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences as well as in Engineering Education.
  2. To provide in-service opportunities for staff in educational institutions, Ministries of Education and related fields for the purpose of up-dating their skills and competences.
  3. To conduct researches into various educational problems and issues, thus helping to solve specific, educational and related problems in Nigeria, as well as contributing to knowledge in the area of educational theories and practices.
  4. To train specific specialists in some fields of education in addition to the general objectives of training classroom teachers.
  5. To contribute significantly through teaching and research to the eradication of illiteracy in Nigeria.
  6. To serve the most immediate environment by means of refresher courses, in-service programmes, short-term programmes and part-time programmes.

The Faculty has achieved these objectives, especially in the last 31 years. These are exemplified in the production of quality teachers in all areas of school disciplines, the educational impact on our immediate environment, and research efforts which have been geared towards addressing the needs of the Nigerian society. For instance, the Institute of Education has served greatly in the provision of in-service training to teachers, the Educational Technology Centre has served the University diligently in the area of coverage and recording of academic and social events, and the Centre for Supportive Services for the Deaf has provided the enabling support for succesful learning of the Deaf. Furthermore, the Faculty has provided seasoned coaches and referees for the sports’ development within the State and for the nation.
