Department of Accounting and Finance 

The Accounting and Finance Department was pioneered by Professor B. O. Ogundele.  He started the Department as the Head of Department in 1981. The Curriculum of the degrees offered here are akin to those offered by the University of Lagos. The first set of students to be enrolled in the Department were in the 1981/82 and they graduated in 1984/85 session

The Department offers courses at professional Diploma, Undergraduate and Postgraduate Levels (M.Sc. and Ph.D.).  Accounting and Finance Programme is meant to produce men and women who are well-trained in all facets of Accounting and Finance with the main purpose of meeting national and international needs in the area of the economy, particularly its role in providing information for effective and efficient management.


The Programme at the undergraduate level aims to:

1. Train students to be self-reliant in the field of Accounting and Finance

2. Produce student who are adequately prepared for Postgraduate work.

3. Produce Accountant and Financiers who can readily impact their knowledge to students at lower levels of education.

4. Develop self-confidence in handling problems associated with accounting and financing function with minimal or no supervision.

5. Train students to develop confidence in appreciating and solving problems in accounting and finance.

At the postgraduate level, the programme is designed for graduate students who have basic background in Accounting and Finance and who require further study and re-orientation to adequately equip themselves with an in-depth understanding of recent development in this field. Advances and the latest state of the art in accounting and finance is reflected in the programme and thus, providing an advanced and specialized course of study in accounting with a view to enhancing career prospect and additional frontier of knowledge.

And training students academically on how to manage financial resources to maximize financial wealth, Our Philosophy is to ensure accuracy and integrity

 

1.    THE DEPARTMENT ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR DIPLOMAS IN ACCOUTNG AND DATA PROCESSING  

Candidates should have five (5) credits at not more than two sittings in GCE/SSCE (0/L) including English Language and Mathematics and any two of Accounting, Economics, Geography, Business Methods, Government and any numerate Science subjects. 

2.    THE DEPARTMENT ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS 

 

B. Sc. (Hons) ACCOUNTING AND B.Sc. (Hons) BANKING AND FINANCE

U.M.E: Five 'O' Level Credits GCE / SSCE / NECO / equivalents to include Eng. Language Mathematics and any other subjects from Accounts, Economics, Business Method, Commerce Geography, Statistics, and Government at not more than two sittings.

U. M.E Subjects: English, Mathematics, and two social science subjects.

Direct Entry

  1. GCE A/L passed in Accounting and at least one of Mathematics Business Management, Economics, Statistics, Geography and Government plus UME entry requirements.
  2. At least three O/L Credit  Passes including English Mathematics and Accounting/Economics at no more than two sittings.

Special Considerations/ Other Qualification: National Diploma in Accounting / Finance or Unilorin Diploma in Accounting /Data Processing with a minimum of Upper Credit grade plus UME entry requirements.

 

 3.      THE DEPARTMENT ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR POSTGRADUATES STUDENTS  

I. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR M.Sc. ACCOUNTING

Candidates with B.Sc. Accounting and relevant discipline from University of Ilorin or any other approved University with appropriate degree of Bachelor and at least a Second Class (Upper Division) Honours or equivalent. However, graduates of the University of Ilorin or any other approved University who achieved a lower classification of the degree of Bachelor less than a Second Class Upper, may be admitted provided they satisfy the Board of Postgraduate School by scoring a minimum, of 55% in qualifying examination administrated by the University.

II. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR PhD ACCOUNTING AND FINANCE

Candidates with M.Sc. Degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Business Administration or Management Sciences from University of Ilorin and other Universities recognized by Senate must have scored at least 60% or its equivalent in their M.Sc. Degree Examinations to qualify for admission to the Doctor of Philosophy Programme. In addition, all such students shall appear for an interview to be conducted by the Department. Final admission depends on the outcome of the interview.
