UNIVERSITY OF ILORIN CENTRE FOR INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION
HOME STAY AND ACCULTURATION PROGRAMME FOR NIGERIAN COMMONWEALTH AND BILATERAL EDUCATION AGREEMENT SCHOLARS
Background
This it to bring to the notice of the University Community that the University of Ilorin has been selected by the Federal Scholarship Board to host the first acculturation programme in Nigeria for the International Students on Commonwealth scholarship and the Bilateral Educational Agreement of the Federal Government. The purpose of the programme is to maximise the benefits accruing from the mutual assistance between the participating countries through the platform of social interaction and formal orientation about some key characteristics of the host country. The selection of Unilorin was based on the positive disposition of the University towards the admission and subsequent welfare of International Students.
A total of 30 students with nationalities from Sierra Leone, Cuba, Romania and China, who have gained admission into 11 Nigerian Universities are expected to be hosted by the University of Ilorin from January 12th to 17th 2012. During their stay they will be taken through a formal orientation programme, group counselling, guided tour of Unilorin campus and visitation to historical places in and around Ilorin.
Hosting of the Scholars
As it is the practice in many societies of the world, the hosting of Scholars under this programme is normally done through the home stay programme (HSP). In other words members of the University community, as was recently discoursed in the Senate, would be required to host one or two of the scholars in their respective families; this is to facilitate a closer interaction with the people and culture of the country.
To this end and consistent with the Unilorin’s commitment to global best practices, Administration will appreciate if members of the University community can indicate their willingness to host these Scholars during the Orientation programme.
It is expected that the responsibilities of the hosting families will be as follows:
- Participation in the group welcome of the Scholars on the February 12th, 2012 at 3pm in the University auditorium.
- Taking home the Scholars that would be allocated to them on same day after the Welcome ceremony.
- Accommodation and feeding from January 12th, to their departure on February 17th, 2012
- Facilitating transportation (to and fro) of the Scholars to agreed meeting points during the week of their orientation. In other word, buses will normally be provided at strategic points to convey the Scholars to venue of the day’s activities, but the host family will be expected to
facilitate how the scholars will get to the collection points and to pick them up to their homes after they have been dropped off. - Participation in a post hosting debriefing exercise for the sharing of the experiences and notes for improvement as may be identified.
