Divisions

The following divisions are proposed for the Centre.

Small Hydro Power

  • Undertake pre-feasibility studies and investigations of potential sites
  • Carry out engineering analysis and design of projects
  • Develop technical specifications for equipment and supplies
  • Carry out technical, economic and financial appraisal of SHP
  • Monitor project development and construction
  • Engage in testing, auditing and certification of SHP.
  • Develop software programs for small scale hydro projects and for other hydrological applications

Hydro Energy System Planning and Operation

  • Develop planning model to study multiple uses for hydropower dams.
  • Develop analytical models for operation
  • Monitor, collate and update operation data at all HP stations.
  • Develop criteria for evaluating operational efficiency of HP stations.
  • Investigate the use of pump storage in existing and future HP stations.
  • Design and incorporate remote sensing and GIS applications in planning and operations of HP systems
  • Perform financial and economic analysis of HP projects

Hydraulics and Hydrology

  • Monitor and measure climatic data at HP stations
  • Study evaporation losses in reservoirs and possible impact on storage and energy generation
  • Carry out hydrologic simulation of rivers and reservoirs using physical and computer models
  • Obtain and manage data on water quality and sediments flow and evaluate risk of reservoir storage loss and effect on operations.
  • Develop a data bank for acquisition, treatment, storage and retrieval of all hydrologic variables including water levels, releases and outflows.
  • Study the hydraulics of river flow and its implications on energy generation and the flood plains
  • Analyse inflow, release, head and other related operational data
  • Develop forecast models for inflows
  • Develop optimisation and simulation models for reservoir regulation and generate operation rule curves

Design and Fabrication

  • Design and testing of high head and low flow turbines
  • Design and testing of low head and high flow turbines
  • Testing of penstocks, nozzles and fittings using various materials
  • Fabrication and testing of model turbines (Kaplan, Francis, Pelton)
  • Design and fabrication of mechanical components (valves, sleeves, shafts, etc)
  • Design and fabrication of electrical components ( switch gear, induction coil, connectors, etc)
  • Hydro turbine flow testing and simulation

Safety and Environment

  • Monitor water levels and provide information on flood discharge
  • Develop and test flood warning systems to reduce risk to downstream areas
  • Obtain and update data on flood plains in terms of land use, population, crops, cultural sites, household property, schools, social services, etc
  • Study structural and non structural flood protection strategies
  • Identify, plan and develop strategies for implementing resettlement programmes
  • Assess HP impact on wildlife, fishing, vegetation, and general ecosystem

Maintenance and Services

  • Installation of all NACHRED equipment
  • Maintenance and repair of all faulty equipment
  • Design and fabrication of spare parts, etc
  • Maintenance of physical facilities
  • Carry out any other duties as may be assigned from time to time
