INSTITUTE OF TRANSLATION ARTS

UNIVERSITY OF ILORIN, ILORIN

OVERVIEW

Following Senate approval of the 24th August 2012, the Centre for Translation Art (CTA) was established in the University of Ilorin. Located in the Faculty of Arts, the Centre was created “to bridge linguistic gaps, break intercontinental language barriers thereby unifying people; link people together by shedding light on their thoughts through Translation and Interpretation activities”. One of the starting points towards realizing these objectives was to offer an M.A. programme in Translation, named MTA.

In 2015, however, the name of the Centre was changed to Institute of Translation Arts (ITA), with a view to enhancing its functionality. The Institute now has a broader mandate to accommodate practical demonstration of the benefits of translation to human development and inter-cultural understanding and co-existence.

Relying on the expertise of experienced academics for its translation activities, ITA currently provides translation services in Arabic, English, French, German and Yoruba languages. Meanwhile, plans are underway to commence translation activities in Nigerian languages such as Igbo and Hausa, and other foreign languages such as Spanish, Chinese, Indian and Swahili.
