The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Sulyman Age Abdulkareem, has cautioned Nigerians, especially the Muslims, against looting public funds in order not to damage the image of Islam.

Prof. Abdulkareem gave the advice penultimate Thursday (June 28, 2018) at the foundation laying ceremony of Al-Burhan Multi-purpose Cooperative Society's Secretariat building located in the premises of the University of Ilorin Central Mosque.

Al-Burhan MCS is a non-interest Islamic Multi-purpose Cooperative Society established in 2003 to provide an alternative to the existing conventional interest-based cooperative societies on the University campus for Muslim and non-Muslim staff.

The Vice-Chancellor said, “Those that must volunteer from time to time to do many things for the public and for Islamic bodies in particular, I want us to be very careful. One wrong step can ruin everybody's name. If we that are supposed to be God-fearing are the ones doing disastrous things, then there is a problem”.

He added, “What is yours is yours, what is the public's is the public's, so you don't go to the public fund and dig your hand into what doesn't belong to you”.

Prof. Abdulkareem told the leaders of the MCS, “This is a Cooperative that is supposed to help everybody, so any way you can contribute to make that help be realised by others, please do it. Leave it to Almighty Allah to reward you”.

On the accumulated funds of the cooperative societies, the Vice-Chancellor explained that it was as a result of unexpected issues from the past records, adding,“A lot of us that came in as temporary workers are not captured in Abuja. That is why over the last three weeks in the Bursary we have been working on normalising things between us and Abuja”.

Earlier in his remarks, the President of Al-Burhan MCS, Dr. I. A. Yusuf, noted that “the modest secretariat building, when completed, will provide adequate office accommodation for our secretariat staff, the business ventures section of the society, a board room, cafeteria, and extra offices for future use”.

The President, who appreciated the Vice-Chancellor and the Unilorin Muslim Community for their usual support, assured the University Management that the project would not be abandoned.

Dignitaries at the event included the Chairman, University of Ilorin Muslim Community, Prof. B. L Adeleke; the Director, University of Ilorin Health Services, Dr. Abdulrasheed Odunola; the Deputy Chief Imam, University of Ilorin Central Mosque, Prof. Nasir Abdulsalam; Prof. F. A.
