RESEARCH INTERESTS AND NOTABLE FINDINGS

Study of the anatomy of the stomatal complex types and the wood structure in relation to the rate of stomatal transpiration in

some multi-purpose economic tree species e.g. Vitellaria paradoxa, Azadirachta indica and Citrus species.

Conservation status of these species is also being studied vis-à-vis exploitation by humans.

Species with high frequency of stomatal complex types with few (1 – 3) subsidiary cells as well as narrow vessel-members are

suitable as pioneer species for revegetation or reforestation of dry, desertified locations.  Species with many subsidiary cells

per stoma and wide vessel-members could subsequently be introduced for humidification of the atmosphere.

Vitellaria paradoxa is being threatened by over-exploitation as sources of fuelwood and charcoal for cooking and bread-baking

activities.
