About Faculty of Agriculture

The Faculty of Agriculture, University of Ilorin was established in the 1982/83 session and had its foundation Dean in the 1983/84 session. Its main building comprises the Dean’s, Sub-Dean’s and Faculty Officer’s offices. Also in the same complex are Departments of Agricultural Extension and Rural Development; Department of Agricultural Economics and Farm Management; and Department of Crop Protection. The Faculty has five-degree programmes of five (5) or four (4) or three (3) academic years for the GCE ‘O’ Level and ‘A” Level holders respectively, leading to the award of Bachelor of Agriculture (B. Agric.) degree with a limited specialization in the final year in any of the following options: Agricultural Economics and Farm Management, Agricultural Extension and Rural Development, Agronomy, Animal Production and Crop Protection.

The policies adopted and practised by the Faculty in pursuit of academic standards and maintenance of academic atmosphere derives largely from laid down policies of the University. These include encouraging staff/student seminars, attendance at University inaugural lectures and other special lectures and attendance at symposia and learned conferences, which are also hosted, by the Department and Faculty when the fund is available.

Annually the Faculty organizes a Faculty Lecture and a Faculty Seminar where students are made to attend.  Each Department also ensures that students attend the seminar presentations on project by undergraduate final year and postgraduate students. The seminars are organized twice each semester.

Departments (Academic Programme, Admission Requirements, General Information)

There are currently eight (8) Academic Departments in the Faculty viz:

  2. Agricultural Extension and Rural Development 
  3. Agronomy 
  4. Animal Production 
  5. Crop Protection 
  6. Home Economics and Food Science 
  7. Forest Resources Management 
  8. Aquaculture and Fisheries

A B.Sc. Agricultural Extension and Community Development programme also commenced during the 2010/2011 Academic Session. This is a three-year special programme supported by the Sasakawa Africa Fund for Extension Education (SAFE) Japan, with emphasis on enhancing the capacity of Extension Agents with H.N.D. qualifications. The programme is to train middle-level Extension Agents in the ADPs and MANR in value-addition Agriculture. The mandate covers the middle-belt and southern zones in Nigeria. It is different from the Faculty B. Agriculture Degree which has a five-year duration for candidates.

Admission Requirements

UTME Candidates

Five ‘O’ level credit passes to include English language, Mathematics, Biology/Agric. Science, and any two of Chemistry, Physics, Geography and Economics.

Direct Entry Candidates

At least two ‘A’ level passes in Chemistry and one from Biology/Botany/Zoology/Agric. Science, Economics, Physics, Geography and Geology/Mathematics (Pure & Applied)

Direct Entry Candidates (Special Consideration, Waiver)

UNILORIN accepts OND/NCE credit pass in Agriculture into 200 level while those with HND may be admitted into 300 level.

History of the Faculty

At the inception of the Faculty in 1982/83, sixty-seven (67) students were admitted to the 100 level. This number has risen to 344 in the 2012/2013 session. The student population in the B. Agric. programme is currently over 3440. The Faculty has graduated more than 3000 students in the B. Agric. programme since its establishment. The first batch of students graduated in the 1986/87 Session. Only seven (7) members of academic staff were on the ground at the inception of the Faculty. However, the staffing situation has improved tremendously to a current total of 79 Faculty members of academic staff for the B. Agric. programme.  High academic standards are maintained by counselling students to work hard, ensuring a conducive atmosphere for studying, the highest credibility of undergraduate admission and good standing regulations at all times. Above all, there is the enthusiasm and dedication of the teaching, technical and administrative staff.
