The Department of Sociology was established in 1982 when the Faculty of Business and Social Sciences was carved out of the Faculty of Arts. Three youth corps members resumed in the new Department of Sociology as teachers in the 1982/83 academic session. Since then the staff strength has fluctuated between five and thirteen and presently thirteen. Two degree programmes – B.Sc. in Sociology and B.Sc. in Social Administration commenced in 1982. By 1991, however, the B.Sc. (Hons) degree programme in Social Administration was scrapped. In 1986, the Senate of the University approved an M.Sc. degree programme in Sociology, and a Ph.D programme in 1996/97 session.

HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHOLOGY

The Department of Psychology in the University of Ilorin was established in 2013/2014 academic session to run a B.Sc degree in Psychology. The department started with two lecturers with a Professor of Industrial Sociology, Professor B. Salawu as its pioneer head.  Later in 2014/2015 academic session, two other academic staff was employed to teach in the department, making the staff strength to be five in all.
