The department is a branch of pharmacy that exposes trainees to the science and technology of drug dosage forms and drug delivery systems. Pharmaceutics encompasses the design and formulation of medicines, the manufacture of medicines on both small (compounding) and large (pharmaceutical technology) scale, the cultivation, avoidance and elimination of microorganisms (Microbiology) and the distribution of medicines to patients (Dispensing and Pharmacy Practice).

The Department of Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Chemistry is part of the highly collaborative, interdisciplinary Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences. Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Chemistry are disciplines at the intersection of chemistry, especially synthetic organic chemistry, and pharmacology and various other biological specialties, where they are involved with design, chemical synthesis and development for market of pharmaceutical agents, or bio-active molecules (drugs).

Pharmacology is a basic biomedical scientific discipline that studies the effect of chemical substances on the function of the living system. It involves the discovery of new drugs, the investigation of how drugs work and the use of drugs to probe mechanisms of disease. The science of pharmacology spans the most fundamental aspects of basic research, through transgenic animal models, to clinical investigation and its divided into many specialties some of which include Neuropharmacology, Clinical Pharmacology, Pharmacogenomic e.t.c . The department kicked off in the university during the 2012/2013 with qualified academic staffs.
