The department is a branch of pharmacy that exposes trainees to the science and technology of drug dosage forms and drug delivery systems. Pharmaceutics encompasses the design and formulation of medicines, the manufacture of medicines on both small (compounding) and large (pharmaceutical technology) scale, the cultivation, avoidance and elimination of microorganisms (Microbiology) and the distribution of medicines to patients (Dispensing and Pharmacy Practice).

Further evolution in areas of pharmacy has now led to carving out of microbiology as a distinct knowledge area.  The concentration presently is studies on all processes that would lead to conversion of a drug chemical into a medicine, medicines being drug delivery systems that are means of getting drugs into the body in a safe, efficient, reproducible and convenient manner.  Research efforts in the department are encouraged in the areas of novel drug delivery systems such as nanoparticles, liposomes, drug targeting etc.
