Department of Medical Microbiology and Parasitology was one of the 4 Departments, which emerged from the original Department of Pathological Sciences that existed at the inception of the Faculty of Health Sciences.

The Department played a leading role in the COBES programme during the pioneering years and in the implementation of the Faculty’s concepts and philosophy of students’ centered learning and integration. 

The Department is guided by the objectives and philosophy of the College of Medicine in concepts and principles of manpower development, research into various areas of local, national and international relevance to the societies.  The department supports the concept of enriching human knowledge, promoting academic excellence, offering leadership, providing services for the benefit of human welfare and productivity.

Department of Medical Microbiology and Parasitology offers a wide range of teaching research and services in topics on Medical and Public Health Helminthology, Protozoolongy, Entomology, Bacteriology, Sexually Transmitted Diseases including AIDs/HIV, Virology, Parasitology, Mycology and Modern Laboratory Techniques and Procedures.

Manpower development are actualized through formal lectures, tutorials, laboratory practices, field postings, students’ centered learning, demonstrations, illustrations, seminars, workshops, research methodologies, biomedical writings, publications, group presentations and written and oral examinations with the supervision of external examiner.
