The College philosophy has been summarised as:

  1. Student-Centred: The curriculum is structured to foster and encourage students' learning in the effective way, i.e. student-centred, rather than through traditional didactics teaching. Effective use of educational resource and objectives are made to reflect this by making the students take responsibilities for their own learning. The process is carefully guided by the teachers in the system.
  2. Problem Solving: The philosophy of problem as a means of effective learning is most suited to medicine and this is being promoted without prejudice to sound preparation in knowledge of the Basic Medical Science.
  3. Integraded Learning: Basic and Clinical Sciences are treated as a continuum, though the student training and the fundamentals of applied science are reinforced throughout his course. The students are encouraged to accept the challenge of science for the understanding of basic concepts as well as application in his subsequent practice of medicine, thereby laying a solid foundation comparable to those of international standard in modern medicine. Years 2 and 3 Students are taught and conducted by basic scientist strongly supported by clinicians while years 4, 5 and 6 are taught by clinicians also supported by basic scientists. Graded responsibilities are introduced and they learn how they will serve and support the communities.
  4. Philosophy of Community Based Experience and Services (COBES) Pre-Clinical: The College of Health Sciences has a main objective of training student who would be doctors capable of working in any part of Nigeria. In fulfilment of this objective it designed a programme of Community Based Experience and Services (COBES) for its students. It is a medium of expression of the College and its Teaching Hospital in an outreach to the community in which they will eventually live and serve. This is in keeping with the National Policy on Medical Education and the World Health Organization's clarion call to achieve "Health for all by the year 2000AD and beyond"

Some of the main objectives of this programme are:

  1. to sensitise the student to community health needs and enable him to identify himself with such health needs.
  2. to assist community health effort and be able to work in any community no matter the cultural and socio-economics situation of such community.
  3. to develop team spirit toward promotion of community health and to develop individual habits of study.
  4. for students to learn and put into practice scientific principles of epidemiology, statistics and preventive medicine.

The focus of the COBES therefore starts with the preparation of a survey map, reasonable estimation of population, familiarisation with the community and epidemiology surveys. Students are divided into groups in a number of postings, and under the guidance of tutors, identify problems for investigation, develop a study design collect and analyses data and draw scientifically valid inference in the chosen community. They also become familiar with the community to discover and appreciate local attitudes, traditions and beliefs.
As a result of this work in the community the students should be able to:

  1. Plan and affect a simple estimate of the population in a given area.
  2. Use the data obtained (in 1 above) and collect facts by mean of surveys on the health needs of the area.
  3. Analyse the data (of 2 above) to design a plan of priorities for action to improve the health of the community.
  4. Carry out community-wide measures or campaign (designed in 3 above) with the help of relevant members of the health team.
  5. Monitor the effect of health measure or campaigns and modify these as necessary.
  6. Communicate the finding of his work and relate them to the development of medical care and scientific advance.

Clinical COBES:
The essence of COBES posting in the clinical years is to provide a continuous community health experience. It also provides an opportunity to evaluate and observe objective improvement in the community. As part of the COBES posting the students are required to:

  1. Supervise the workers of a health team and lead them.
  2. Run clinics and perform home visits on patients with social problems and report on them.
  3. Maintain necessary supplies for a clinic and work with the relevant health authority to achieve this.

Through the COBES posting (i.e. Pre-Clinical and Clinical) students are encouraged to:

  1. Gather information about prevailing attitude to health and disease in any community and use it when planning the health care for individuals or for the community.
  2. Identify climate and seasonal factors which affect the patterns of disease nutrition, work and movement of people in any area and use such data in health planning.
  3. Identify the relationship between occupation and disease on one hand and the effects of disease on productivity on the other.
