Professor Yisa Moronfola Fakunle of Department of Medicine, Faculty of Clinical Sciences, University of Ilorin is the first to be appointed to the newly created post of Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research, Technology and Innovation-(RTI)). He assumed duty on August 9, 2011. He is the new Deputy Vice Chancellor (Management Services). 

He joined University of Ilorin in October 2009 as contract Professor of Medicine after a visiting Professorship in the spring of 2009 at Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto.

He is an internationally experienced doctor and researcher. He has more than 30 years experience in Nigeria, Middle East and the UK. He is a proven administrator who excels at streamlining clinical and research operations. He is adept at teaching and mentoring at university level with a demonstrable track record of excellence in establishing new departments and programs. His landmark research was on Tropical Splenomegaly Syndrome (now Hyper Reactive Malaria Splenomegaly) for which he was awarded MD degree of University of Ibadan in 1979.

He had his undergraduate education at University of Ibadan (1963-1968) as a scholar of Northern Nigerian Government. He became University Scholar, University of Ibadan in 1964. He graduated with M.B.B.S in 1968 and won the Blair Aitkin’s Gold Medal Prize in Surgery. He trained in Internal medicine and Gastroenterology (1970-1973) at the Department of Medicine, University of Bristol (UK). He had his fellowship training in Hepatology at the Royal Free Hospital London. He returned to Zaria where he had had his internship and SHO training under Professor E.H.O. Parry to join the vibrant Department of Medicine. His research training in immunology was under the mentorship of Professor B.M. Greenwood, at the MRC Laboratory in Zaria.

Professor Fakunle progressed continually to become the first indigenous Head of Medicine department in Zaria in 1981. He also was first Head Department of Medicine in 1991 at the inception of Bayero University Medical School in Kano.

Professor Fakunle is a Fellow of several professional affiliations such as Royal College of Physicians of London, West Africa College of Physicians, and Patron Nigerian Society of Gastroenterology & Hepatology, etc.

Professor Fakunle was born at Oloyan’s Compound, Ipee, Oyun Local Government, Kwara State in 1942. He is an honorary Chief (Mayegun) of Ipee. He is married with children.
