Degree Programmes

The Faculty of Education, University of Ilorin, run degree programmes at the bachelor and graduate levels (Masters and PhD) in the Departments and the Institute of Education. Following are the programmes and the Departments where the programmes are housed.

Institute of Education
The Institute of Education through Sandwich runs degree programmes (in programmes outlined in the Departments) and pre-degree Diplomas in various fields of Education.

ASE 114: Introduction to Educational Foundations 2 Cr.
A brief survey of the scope, rationale and basic concepts of the foundational disciplines – philosophy, history, psychology, sociology – and a discussion of the work of some of the major scholars that have contributed to the development of each discipline. 30h (T); C

ASE 115: Introduction to the Principles of Instruction 2 Cr.
Introduction to the general principles and methods of teaching; concepts of the three tier of teaching practice experiences 30h (T); C

ASE 116: Introduction to Educational Psychology 2 Cr.
Rudiment of educational psychology. The basic principles and scope of the areas of educational psychology such as psychology of learning, developmental psychology, personality and measurement and evaluation 30h (T); C

ASE 201: Introduction to Sociology of Education and Social Psychology 2 Cr.
Basic concepts in the sociology of education and social psychology, social structures and the socialization of the child. The dynamics of school groups, group influence and attitudes, motivation and achievement. Introduction to test, measurement and evaluation, and their roles in education. Types of tests, characteristics, uses and methods of construction. Definition of types of research, basic steps in research; writing research proposal and reports; methods of citation, references and bibliographic styles. EDU 305: History and Policy of Education in Nigeria 2 Cr.
A study of educational development in Nigeria, with special emphasis on the evolution of current policies and practices. Traditional and modern systems of educational in Nigeria. EDU 306: First Aid and Safety Education 2 Cr.
Meaning and scope of first aid, concept and significance of safety education, types of accidents and implications, first aid treatments of physical injuries, unconsciousness and respiratory arrest, artificial respiration and cardiopulmonary resuscitation, emergency care for victims of foreign bodies in the ear eyes, and nose, practical demonstration of safety measures and first aid practices. 15h (T); 45h (P); C

The historical and philosophical foundations of modern education. Education in ancient Greece Rome, Britain, USA and West Africa. Evaluation of modern ideas and practices in education. Basic philosophical concepts. Major philosophies such as naturalism, realism, pragmatism, existentialism, and democracy, and their bearing on education. Human development concepts and processes from conception, with emphasis on physical intellectual, social, emotional development . Genetic, endocrinal and environmental (pre-perter and post-menthl influences on development). 30h (T); C

Teaching and learning in relation to the other processes of education; subject-centered and problem-centered teaching methods; teacher-pupil and pupil-pupil interactions; innovations in teaching classroom management and discipline. 30h (T); C
