Programmes

Degree Programmes

Undergraduate
The Department has responsibility for students on the B.A.(Ed.), B.Sc.(Ed.) B.Ed. degrees which can be obtained with honours in the following eight subjects in the humanities and two social sciences:

  1. Arabic (RAL)
  2. Christian Studies (RS)
  3. Economics (ECN)
  4. English (ENF)
  5. French (FRE)
  6. Geography (GPY)
  7. History (HIS)
  8. Islamic Studies (IS)
  9. Primary Education Studies (PES)
  10. Yoruba (LIY).

While appropriate courses in these subjects are offered in the Faculties of Arts and Business and Social Sciences, the Courses in Education are offered in the Faculty of Education.

Postgraduate
At the postgraduate level, the Department offers courses leading to the M.Ed. and Ph.D. degrees in:

  1. Educational Psychology
  2. Educational Measurement and Evaluation
  3. History and Policy of Education
  4. Comparative Education
  5. Philosophy of Education
  6. Sociology of Education
  7. English Education
  8. Yoruba Education
  9. Arabic Education
  10. Islamic Education and
  11. Curriculum Studies.

Graduation Requirements
To be eligible for the award of a degree, a student must obtain a total of 120 credits in a 4-year programme or 90 credits in a 3-year degree programme including those earned from all cored courses and those earned in GNS 111, 112, 211, 212 and 311. Specifically, the following conditions are required:

  1. A minimum of 90 credits (in the case of the 3-year programme) or 120 credits (in the case of the 4-year programme) must be earned including all compulsory courses.
  2. At least 60 of the 90 or 120 credits required for graduation as appropriate must be earned at the 300 and 400 levels of the degree programme.
  3. At least 25 credits must be earned in each of Education and a sec and major subject and a minimum of 5 credits from a minor subject between the 300 and 400 levels of a degree programme.
  4. A minimum of cumulative grade point average of 1.50 must be obtained at the end of a degree programme.
