Department of Arts & Social Science Education

History of the Department
The Department of Arts and Social Sciences Education started as the Department of Education in October 1976 at the inception of the University. In October 1978, it became Department of Teacher Education and was responsible for courses in Historical, Philosophical, Psychological and Sociological Foundations of Education as well as courses in Educational Evaluation, Curriculum Studies and Educational Technology.

In October 1981, the Department of Teacher Education was split into two, namely the Department of Educational Foundations and the Department of Curriculum Studies and Educational Technology. From October 1981, the Department of Educational Foundations was responsible for coordinating and teaching foundational courses leading to Bachelor’s Degree in Education in seven Arts based disciplines and higher degree in six programmes. When two undergraduate programmes in Social Sciences Education were removed from the defunct Department of Curriculum Studies and Educational Technology and merged with the seven in the former Department of Educational Foundations in February 2005, the Department took on its present name.
