Professor Olatunji, Gabriel Ademola was born in Boripe Local Government Area in Osun State on 12th February, 1949, to the family of Mr & Mrs Olatunji.

After his primary education at St. Mary Catholic Primary School, Iree/Iba.  He proceeded to St. Augustine’s Catholic Secondary Modern School Inisha (1961-1963) and Baptist High school, Iree (1964-1968).   Thereafter, he was at Obafemi Awolowo University (formerly University of Ife) Ile Ife and Technical University Berlin, Germany for his Undergraduate and Postgraduate Degrees respectively.

He was awarded the degree of (B.Sc.) Hons Chemistry (1973) from University of Ife, Ile Ife with (21) and Diploma – Chemiker (M.Sc. Chemistry) January (1979) from Technical University, Berlin, Germany.  Dr.rer.nat (Ph.D) Chemistry, October (1980) from Technical, University, Berlin Germany.  He became an International Fellowship in 1984 (post doctoral fellowship) from (DAAD) for short research visit to Universities in Germany every 3 years.

Post doctoral fellowship from Catholic Academic Exchange Scholarship Programme (KAAD) for Research visit to Germany.  Research fellowships from Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) in collaboration with Chinese Academic of Sciences (CAS) for research visit to Institute of Cellulose and Lignocellulosic Chemistry, Guangzhou in China and Institute of Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences Taipei in Taiwan.

He is a member of Academic and Professional Societies; Science teachers Association of Nigeria, Fellow Chemical of Society of Nigeria.  Also a member of German Chemical Society.

Prof. Olatunji started his career as a Graduate Assistant, Chemistry Department, University of Ife (1974-1975).  Rose through the ranks and became Professor of Chemistry , 1st October, 1975 to date.  He has over forty-two years teaching experience at the University level.  Professor Olatunji has supervised many postgraduate students at both Masters and Ph.D levels.  He has published over eighty-five articles in local, national and international peer reviewed journals.

In terms of administrative responsibilities Professor Olatunji has held a number of Academic and Administrative positions within and outside the ivory tower.  Notable among which are: Department of Examinations Officer 1981-1983, Sub-Dean, Faculty of Science, Unilorin 1988-1990;  Director, Science Laboratory Technology Programme, Unilorin 1991-1993.  Head of Department of Chemistry, Unilorin 1994-1996, Head of Department of Chemistry, Unilorin 1994-1996.  Head of Department of Chemistry, Adekunle Ajasin University, (AAU) Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State 2004-2005 (On Sabbatical).  Chairman Kwara Chamber Chemical Society of Nigeria, 2009 todate.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research, Technology and Innovation), University of Ilorin, Ilorin 2014 to date.  In addition to these, he was opportune to serve in various committee including among others, member of University Senate, former Chairman Departmental Academic and Postgraduate Planning Committee, former Chairman, Faculty of Science Fellowships and Linkages Committee, Chairman Ad-hoc Committee on Public presentation of FGN White paper 2007, Chairman University Ad-hoc committee on Alternative Sources of Laboratory Research Equipment 2000, Member, University Senate’s Estimates Committee 2004-2006, Chairman University of Ilorin, Inter-Religious Council, Former Chairman, University of Board of Survey, Congregation Representative on Capital Projects Implementation Task Force, Editor-In-Chief, Nigeria Journal of Pure and Applied Science, Faculty of Science Journal, Chairman, Senate Ad-hoc Committee on Institutional self Assessment for NUC Institutional Accreditation October/November 2010.

Professor Olatunji had Post-Doctoral Research Experience, Visiting Research Fellow, Institute of Organic Chemistry, Visiting Research Fellow, Institute of Pharmaceutical Biology, Bonn, Germany.  Visiting Research Fellow, Institute of Chemistry, Chinese Academic of Sciences, Guangzhou, China.  Visiting Professor to Institute of Chemistry Academic Sinica, Taipei, Taiwan.

Professor Olatunji is a recipient of several honours and awards among which are, Best Science Student Prize December 1968, Baptist High School Iree, Best Student Award in 1968 WASC, Baptist High School, Iree.  Best Student Award, Chemistry Department, University of Ife, June 1973.  He was awarded a scholarship at Federal Government Scholarship for B.Sc Programme.  German Academic Exchange Scholarship (DAAD) for M.Sc. and Ph.D.

Prof. Olatunji can speak German language both oral and written fluently.  He is married and blessed with children.
