Department of English Brief on the Department The present department of English, formerly known as Modern European Languages, was established in 1976, along with the Faculty of Arts as well as other departments and faculties in the University of Ilorin. As the Department of Modern European Languages, it housed English, French and German programmes. It was not until 2004 that it became the Department of English, when the French arm was granted its own autonomy as a department.
The first head of the department was the Late Professor David Cook, who, along with Professors S. Adewoye, O. Obafemi and Late E. E. Adegbija, formed the foundation staff. Since then, the staff strength has variously grown and dropped to the present number of seventeen lecturers.
These staff members are engaged in the teaching of English Language and Literature to undergraduate students of both disciplines. In addition, they teach and supervise post-graduate students at all levels. Besides this, they are engaged in teaching Remedial English Language to Science students, Remedial English Language and Literature to Arts Students, GNS English as well as English Language and Literature to Sandwich Students.
The core undergraduate and post-graduate programmes in Literature embrace the three genres of drama, prose and poetry, while those in Language include phonology, semantics, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, stylistics, and so on.
